Should I Repair or Replace my Windshield?

A windshield chip repair can stop damage from spreading and help restore visibility. It’s important to know that repairs are designed to improve the damage, not make it completely invisible.

Most repairs leave behind a small mark or slight haze where the chip was: The goal is to:

  • Prevent cracks from spreading

  • Restore structural strength

  • Improve appearance as much as possible

If the damage is too large, directly in the driver’s line of sight, or already cracking, replacement may be the safer option.

When a Windshield Can Usually Be Repaired

  • Small chips (typically smaller than a quarter)

  • Bullseye chips

  • Star Breaks

When Replacement is Recommended

  • Long cracks

  • Damage near the edge of the windshield

  • Multiple chips

  • Chips in the drivers direct line of sight

  • Damage that has collected dirt or moisture for a long period of time

What to Expect From a Repair

Windshield repair resin fills the damaged area and strengthens the glass, but every repair will look different depending on size and depth of the chip, how long the damage has been there, dirt or moisture contamination, and type of break pattern. Some repairs become barely noticeable, while others may still show a faint outline or blemish afterward.
